Palestine: Laboratory for the Future
An informative and provocative presentation by John Collins, Professor and Chair of Global Studies, St Lawrence University, Thursday October 11th, 2012. These are two links to video of his talk: on Vimeo) and Streaming video and broadcast schedule Channel 17 (Town Meeting Television)This talk provides clear and novel insights into the consequences of ‘Settler Colonialism’ for indigenous populations exploited and displaced by settlers, backed up by military force. He used several historical examples (South Africa, Australia and North America), and focused especially on the current case of Israel’s continued settlement of Palestinian land.Palestine is the site of an ongoing settler-colonial occupation. Colonized territories have long served as testing grounds for new forms of violence, social control, solidarity, and resistance that often have broader global implications. Palestine is no exception. Based on his new book Global Palestine, John Collins will explore what we can learn about the future of settler-colonialism, permanent war, contemporary globalization and indigenous resistance movements by excavating Palestine’s past and its struggle against occupation and colonialism. John Collins teaches courses on globalization, social change, media and cultural studies, and the global politics of violence at St. Lawrence University. His book Global Palestine was published in London by Hurst in 2011 and in New York by Columbia University Press in 2012.
