Gazans raise money for Haiti
PNN 19 Jan 2010 - Palestinians in Gaza set off for the Red Cross headquarters on Monday to offer donations and financial support for the victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake on Tuesday. Relatives of Palestinian prisoners also participated in the drive, with many offering financial donations and goods including blankets and covers, as well as food and milk for children. The report comes after the Palestinian Authority,...

PA to send humanitarian aid to Haiti
1/19/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - During its weekly cabinet meeting the Palestinian Authority announced it would provide humanitarian aid for the victims of the Haiti earthquake last week, and form a committee to follow up on its distribution. In its Monday evening meeting the cabinet expressed its condolences for those who lost relatives in Haiti and declared the solidarity of the Palestinian people with the people of Haiti. It was further declared that the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was mandated to monitor the situation of the Palestinian community in Haiti and to provide humanitarian relief to the devastated country. Settlements and Jerusalem - Caretaker Prime Minister Salam Fayyad called on the Quartet to not recognize Israeli preconditions imposed on illegal settlement expansion, exemplified in continued construction throughout the occupied Palestinian territories as a means to resume negotiations swiftly, he said.

Witness to a nightmare
Socialist Worker.org January 18, 2010 - "I was in Gaza last summer, and when I saw the news picture from Haiti, I was struck by how much it looked like Gaza. Like you've described--big piles of concrete and twisted rebar and broken bricks everywhere you looked." - Jesse Hagopian, a teacher in Seattle and contributor to SocialistWorker.org, was in Port-au-Prince with his 1-year-old son to visit his wife when the earthquake hit. His wife, an aid worker, works until the evening on most days, but by sheer luck, she came to the hotel where they were staying early on Tuesday--just minutes before the quake struck at 4:53 p.m. This spared Jesse and his family agonizing hours or days trying to find one another amid the chaos. Within hours, the hotel where they were staying became known as a place where some medical help was available, because another hotel guest happened to be an emergency medical technician. Jesse got a crash course in treating severe injuries--broken bones, head wounds and more--as people desperate for help kept arriving.

Humanitarian aid or military occupation?
Uruknet January 19, 2010 - ...IF THE Obama administration were pursuing a humanitarian policy in Haiti, it wouldn't have appointed George Bush to join former President Bill Clinton in overseeing fundraising for disaster relief. Not only did Bush spectacularly fail the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but his administration orchestrated a political destabilization campaign against Haiti's democratically elected government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide....

A lootin' an' a burnin'?
Uruknet January 18, 2010 - It was obvious from the getgo that media 'coverage’ of the earthquake in Haiti was heading in the same, predictable direction, namely down the same racist path that Western media coverage of things 'darker than blue’ always travels. [...] Meanwhile, the US has de facto occupied Haiti, no doubt to preserve its sweatshop investments, amongst which are...

Gazan Children Donate Haiti
19 Jan 2010 - Gaza, January 19, 2010 (Pal Telegraph) - Gaza might be besieged by Israel and others, but Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip have been donating what little they have to help those struck by the earthquake in Haiti. The donations collected by a Red Cross representative are toys, toiletries and sweets. They were small luxuries that Gazans know only too...
